Do you live in a “ferret-free zone”?
So your convinces that a ferret is the right pet for you before you run out and purchase your fuzzy you need to check and see that ferrets are legal in your State.You might be surprised but there are still “Ferret Free Zones”.
What’s a Ferret Free Zone? In a Ferret Free Zone it is illegal to own a ferret. The only two States, in the USA, where it is illegal to own a ferret are California and Hawaii. It’s important to note that even if your state is Ferret Friendly some counties still consider it illegal to own ferrets.
If you are caught you could be heavily fined. The ferret is usually taken from the premises and killed. The list of FFZ is diminishing but the fact that there are places where these antiquated laws exist is appalling to many a ferret lover.
Permits
Did you know that some states require a permit to keep a ferret; also many municipalities across the nation either prohibit or control the possession of ferrets.
Why do these laws exist?
Misinformation! There are many ferret myths out there. Hopefully once people are educated about these fabulous animals these archaic laws will be changed.
How can this law be changed?
1. Education
- In order to change the laws we need to educate people and work together to make changes. There are many ferrets’ rights organizations that are working tirelessly in places where they are illegal.
