Ferrets: Sleeping The Day Away

Currently my ferrets are snuggled up in their barrel (their ferrets haven.)  I’ve noticed when it gets colder outside my ferrets sleep a lot more.  Hanuman and Kali are now adult ferrets and their appetite has slowed down somewhat.  Than goodness!  It was a challenge keeping up with their huge appetites.  It was amazing that something that weighs under five pounds could eat so much.  My ferrets are raw fed ferrets. I’ve been feeding them raw food for over a year.

Initially, it was a challenge to get my ferrets to convert but I’m happy to say that they’ve done well on their raw food diet. The improvements have been impressive. My ferret’s fur is thicker and glossier. I don’t have to brush their teeth anymore. The raw meaty bones do an excellent job of brushing their teeth. I picked up the book Rawy Meaty Bones by Tom Lansdale last year.

I found it to be extremely informative. He’s a veterinarian and has spoken out against many within the pet food industry. He has challenged the quality of food that has been produced. The book is informative, and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of adding raw food into their pets diet. Although the book mainly focused on dogs and cats, he does mention exotic pets in the book. I adjusted the raw food that I gave my ferrets.

Interestingly enough ferrets in westernized cultures are more susceptible to disease than their European cousins. The majority of the European ferrets are fed a raw diet.

My ferrets seem to have a lot more energy (as if they needed more.) Today I went to the store and purchase thighs, legs, and chicken backs for them. I did not find their beef hearts (one od their favorite treats) but I’ll try to locate later this week.
